Great Torrington and District Care Forum

The Great Torrington and District Care Forum was established in February 1986 to network all those working in the health, welfare, caring, religious areas of our community, whether these workers are paid or voluntary, part-time or full-time.

It is a monthly working lunch usually on the second Wednesday and held in Great Torrington. The meetings are both informal and formal, where over lunch members can meet co-workers on a one to one basis; and after in open forum exchange information relating to areas of concern, future ideas or plans, news and views - either from a member’s individual agency/group, or from a general community perspective.

Occasionally the Forum has guest speakers, as requested by members.

Management

The Forum is run by members, for members. There is an AGM in May/June each year where a chair, vice chair, treasurer are elected. The Forum pays a small honorarium for secretarial time to enable notes from each meeting, plus agenda, to be dispatched to each member, each month. In addition, there is a very comprehensive members’ directory available, of all caring/welfare agencies/organisations serving the Torrington catchment area.

Mutual Support

Sometimes our concern and service to others, blinds us to our own needs and concerns. This has been the case over the years with some members of the Forum. Following a wake-up call relating to a member, the Forum established the principle that all members could be approached by a colleague regarding first level stress. However, this is voluntary and it is agreed and established that the member approached has the right to decline and would be respected for this decision.

Care Forum Members

Members come from a very wide range of groups/agencies and below is but a sample

Space does not permit a full listing here, please see the Care Forum Directory for all local agencies, including members.

Areas of discussion and action

Generally speaking the Forum is NOT an initiating organisation, although over the 19 years it has promoted one or two projects of its own, however the main emphasis is on networking and communication; being used as a sounding board for member's news and views and proposed projects/concerns.

However, we have established the 'Crier', 'Friends', RUST and Coldline Service.

We have helped establish the Community Development Trust, the Zebra Crossing, the Crocus and Toads, an NHS dental surgery...amongst other ventures.

We have been involved with and supported car parking charges; disabled bays; family workshops; health promotion; GTS’s sport hall; after school clubs; Gulf War support group; nursery education; crematorium facilities; skate board facility; the Torrington 'smell'...to name but a very few.

Meetings

Usually the second Wednesday of the month, 11:45 to 13:30. A 'year in advance' list of dates is published. No meeting August.

Meetings are held at The Early Years Centre, Burwood, Great Torrington (01805 625830)

Membership

Members usually join on behalf of their agency/group, but individual members are also warmly welcomed.
